About

Hello my name is Chandi. I am an experienced expert in mini grids development, renewable energy financial and business modelling including Decentralised Energy Service Companies (DESCOs), gender and energy, renewable energy markets, biogas, productive use of energy, climate mitigation, climate finance, project management, capacity development, and circular economy. I am interested in mentoring female energy entrepreneurs anywhere in the world, as I am passionate about inclusion and diversity. I am also interested in mentoring projects to become investor ready with skills to develop business plans, financial models, investor pitches and investor presentations. I feel the disparity between men and women in the energy sector is wide, and needs to be addressed through mentoring more female energy entrepreneurs with potential. In my 15 years of experience in the Renewable Energy sector, I have seen real benefits in providing mentorship to female energy entrepreneurs that have cascaded to increased share of income in the sector to women, and an increase to clean energy access for women. I am particularly experienced in using the gender lens approach. I also have experience as a mentor with GWNET, ILO, and PFAN, and also as an Advisor with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, Practical Action, and in my individual capacity.

Mentorship motivation

  • I like to learn about industries and new businesses
  • I want to give back to the startup ecosystem and entrepreneurs coming up
  • I want to make new connections for myself and/or the organization I represent
  • I want to scout for new opportunities in engaging as an advisor or for a board seat

Renewable energy is one of the sectors with an anticipated high growth rate. Yet the percentage of women who participate or benefit in the sector is small. More women in Africa do not have access to clean and modern energy services, yet I have learned that when more attention is paid to designing inclusive business models, it is possible to come up with business models that enhance affordability for female customers and viability for companies. It is also my conviction that renewable energy products and services can address women’s needs if proper needs assessments are done together with women users. Over the years I have acquired knowledge on best practices that I am sure will benefit female energy entrepreneurs, therefore I am keen to be a mentor.
