I am an ex-SME operator and investor with a passion for supporting African innovation at the early stage.
The first reason early stage companies fail is access to capital, the second is market access (I.e., access to new networks, customers, new investors, new strategies, etc.).
In line with the data, over my investment career, I have found that the most valuable part of being an investor is the post-investment I can provide to founders. This is the part of the investment journey where you get to really build a relationship with the founder and become a true partner that adds value to them on their journey.
Building a successful business is a team sport – it takes many partners, different perspectives and a lot of different forms of support.
As an investor, I get to see many different business models and strategies that can help founders frame their approach to certain critical issues. I think it’s important to provide this perspective to founders to help them build more solid, sustainable businesses.
